I am not a big fan of Punjabi movies. I mean currently they are all about corny comedies with crappy story lines with too many punchlines.

Introduction 

Punjabi Cinema’s Current State vs. Classics

I consider “Ucha Dar Bebe Nanak Da” and “Chann Pardesi” as two of the best attempts made to contribute to classic cinema. Sikandar is the third movie for me. 

A Rare Attempt at Serious Cinema 

Sikandar: A Film That Stands Apart from Corny Comedies

(Don’t expect any cheap jokes or too much comedy from this amazing movie!!) The audience has never tried to make this kind of movie because of their taste. The excellent screenplay, shaky camera and dialogues really impress me because I also live in Punjab. I live in the Malwa region.

A Cinematic Style Inspired by Anurag Kashyap 

Shaky Camera Work and Raw Dialogues Reflect Realism

I am familiar with dialogues like “Saade Aaliya” and “Ehnu Koda Hona Kende Aa”. Definitely inspired by Anurag Kashyap’s direction style (actors don’t know where the camera is) that is the soul of the movie. The gripping story well shows how Punjabis’ lives are harmed by the system’s control of their hot blood.

Sikandar” tells the story of an individual who battles against corruption and crime in society. Ultimately, the narrative promises to evoke strong emotions and inspire viewers as Salman Khan’s character takes on the forces of evil.

Performances That Stand Out 

Gul Panag, Kartar Cheema, and Om Puri’s Convincing Roles

Gul Panag has done justice to her role and Kartar Cheema’s screen presence is absolutely convincing when facing the camera. The entire cast and crew have done a brilliant job. Om Puri’s description of an Indian film is exactly like Morgan Freeman’s description of a Hollywood film. 

Characters Driven by Human Emotions 

Jealousy, Greed, Love, and Revenge in a Politically Charged Setting

I apologize for not being able to name some of the best actors as I don’t know their names. I eagerly await more work like this from every member who helped create this film. Do try it out, great piece. Sikandar is a film where every scene is a complete story in itself. The film depicting the socio-political milieu of the state of Punjab could be anywhere in the country. From the first scene to the last scene, it is a gradual beginning to the end of Sikandar. 

Not Your Usual Punjabi Cinema 

Breaking Away from Stereotypical Heroic Tropes

A group of drunken, macho characters who show their real inner lives. Its characters live with human instincts like jealousy, greed for power, deceit, love and revenge. If one wants to see yellow-green fields of mustard flowers where the main hero dances and sings, or strikes with his physical strength or kills the villains, then this is not for them. Empowering women politically is also the central point of the plot. So do watch it.

Plot Overview 

Sikandar’s Journey in Student Politics and Relationships

Sikandar is the journey of a boy Sikandar (Cheema) who comes to Chandigarh to join a political party and support his friends. But soon he finds himself in the middle of all that, where he has to contest the presidential election. During their tenure, Sikandar and his friends face a variety of problems and find that Sikandar’s ex-girlfriend Beant (Gul Panag) is contesting against him in the next elections due to some compelling circumstances. The film talks about student politics, drug use and relationships in colleges.

The Film’s Unfulfilled Potential 

Promising Premise, but the Execution Falls Short

When the film released its first promo, the filmmakers hoped to take Punjabi cinema to the next level by telling deep and meaningful stories. But sadly, Sikandar is not that film and we will have to wait for some more time till Himmat Singh – Punjab 1984 arrives. Talking about Sikandar, the film has a story to tell but unfortunately it is not told well.

Mixed Reception of the Story 

Good Story on Paper, But Lacks Depth on Screen

Jatinder Mohar’s story is good on paper but it falls flat on screen. While some parts were quite believable, viewers did not like others. The filmmakers could slightly shorten the film by 15 minutes. Perhaps that would have helped in telling the story better. The dialogues of the film were just a bit cheesy. Mohar did not live up to the expectations that he had raised with his previous work.

Music and Dialogue Critique 

Average Soundtrack with Some Memorable Moments

The music in Sikandar was absolutely average. It did not manage to make the film an instant buzz and sadly, none of the songs appealed to the people. Hooter still managed to grab attention. Yaari te Sardari also suits the pace of the film. Kartar Cheema as Sikandar did a good job and played his role well and could be a possibility for lead roles in the future.

Acting Performances 

Kartar Cheema’s Promising Future and Yaad Grewal’s Impactful Villain

His expressions conveyed a lot more than his dialogues. Gul Panag has made a confident debut in the Punjabi film industry. It won’t be a surprise if she wins an award at the PTC Awards next year. Victor John gave a satisfactory performance. Yaad Grewal stole the show. Punjabi cinema has been missing a villain like him for a very long time.

Drug Use as a Plot Device 

The Excessive Depiction of Drug Use and Its Lack of Justification

He really has what it takes to become an iconic villain in Punjabi cinema if he gets a few more roles like this. The other supporting cast didn’t contribute much. Manav Vij was as good as ever but could have been used in a better way. The supporting cast didn’t put up any impressive performances this time.

Salman Khan has officially begun shooting for his upcoming film “Sikandar.” In this film, he will be portraying an “angry young man” character. In “Sikandar,” Salman will play a character who takes on a major criminal gang in society. Notably, his role will be defined by his strength and deep-seated emotions, thereby combining action-packed sequences with heartfelt moments. Ultimately, this dynamic portrayal is set to leave a significant impact on audiences.

Conclusion 

Sikandar: A Missed Opportunity for a Milestone in Punjabi Cinema

The film shows the excessive use of different types of drugs in daily life by college students, which in no way seems justified or goes with the story. Sikandar falls prey to careless writing and some average direction. If the filmmakers had matured the story well, this film could have become a milestone in Punjabi cinema.

The film depicts that it is easy to achieve stature and power but it is not really easy to maintain it. The youth of Punjab will like this film the most.
